Chapter 18

Annette, I’m more than happy to go,” I said, “but as I think about this, I sincerely believe we could use some more help.”

“You’re thinking of Dani and Aideen?”

“Absolutely. I know you trust them as much as you trust anyone, but it may interest you to know that I do as well. We’ve been through quite a lot together, on opposite sides and on the same side, but in either case, they bring out the best in me. Yes, I’m a genius; we all know that. But they make me more than that. They challenge me to think in ways I can’t come up with on my own. They see things I don’t see. If I’m going back to 2741 to find clues, I could use their help.”

“And if I send you to them, you think you can convince them to come here?”

“I’m not sure,” I said. “But I’d like to try.”

Annette was quiet for a while, even longer than her usual pause, while she thought things through.

“What are you thinking, Annette?”

“I’m thinking I’ve called on them so many times already,” she replied. “I just don’t think it’s fair to do it again.”

“There’s more at stake this time than ever,” I countered. “And frankly, I think they’re bored. Life on Terrene is peaceful, but those two like the action, and I believe they’d jump at the chance to help us.”

“Well, when you put it that way,” she said. “I’ll program the time station to take you to them on Terrene.”

“All right, let’s go to the time station then,” I said.

When we went to the control room, and Annette set the machine to take me to Terrene, at a time that was thirty-nine days after I’d departed to go under the sea, which is how much actual time had passed since I left New Madagascar for my underwater adventure. She gave me three time location devices—one for myself and one each for Dani and Aideen—and I went into the station and sat in one of the many seats. Before I left, a thought message from Annette came into my mind.

If Dani and Aideen decide not to come, please give them my regards from 2749. And come back soon, okay?

Yes, of course, I said. I’ll be back straight away!

Annette’s plea for me to return reminded me how terribly lonely she must have been, for eight years, all alone on planet Earth. I cautioned myself not to fall madly in love with her again simply because I had her all to myself. I was sure that her love for me would never be rekindled because of all the terrible things I had done, so I concentrated on the extraordinary galactic mystery that had led to all of this. Fascinating. Exciting! Another great project to keep me busy. Thank you, Annette. I’ll be back soon, hopefully with our two friends in tow. And then, off I went.

I shook off the cobwebs after my entry onto Terrene. I was on the main street of town, outside of the administrative building where Clarion and Zephyr worked.
